American composer born in Omaha, Nebraska. Perhaps his best known work is Selections from McGuffey's Reader, settings of three 19th century American poems. The first movement, "The One Horse Shay", is based on a work by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., while the second and third, "John and Priscilla Alden" and "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere", are based on works by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
