Stravinsky, photographed by Arnold Newman (1946)

This is my collection Igor Stravinsky recordings. Most of them have been bought before 1980, and are gramophone records, in newspeak referred to as "vinyl", which is, at my place, on the kitchen floor. So I am not a second-hand dealer, or a car-boot sniffler. From an early age I have always been fascinated by the music of one of the 20th century great figures. With the entries I have put some information about the recordings and some remarks and opinions. I also quote from some of Stravinsky's books, which he wrote together with Robert Craft. These entries have been added randomly, in the order I got the records and cds from the shelf. It is a challenge to see if these loose listings can be glued together to a coherent discography. In the meantime, I am looking for additions and refinements, but the Master himself, Robert Craft and Ernest Ansermet offer definitive interpretations.

My discography has been reordered in accordance with amongst others the list of works and arrangements in Stephan Walsh's monumental Stravinsky biography. Other sources are: The Boosey and Hawkes website and www.dpmusik.de and from my ever growing collection of books about Stravinsky. A list of those is available as part of this website.

In order to see all linked pages this discography has to be viewed in frames. You will see an alphabetical list of composers at the left side, and the list of works by the selected comnposer on the right.

1913 Le Sacre du Printemps

Comments:

The painter Nicholas Roerich shared his idea with Stravinsky in 1910, his fleeting vision of a pagan ritual in which a young girl dances herself to death. Stravinsky's earliest conception of The Rite of Spring was in the spring of 1910. Stravinsky writes, "... there arose a picture of a sacred pagan ritual: the wise elders are seated in a circle and are observing the dance before death of the girl whom they are offering as a sacrifice to the god of Spring in order to gain his benevolence. This became the subject of The Rite of Spring."

While composing The Firebird, Stravinsky began forming sketches and ideas for the piece, enlisting the help of Roerich. Though he was sidetracked for a year while he worked on Petrushka (which he intended to be a light burlesque as a relief from the orchestrally intense work already in progress), The Rite of Spring was composed between 1912 and 1913 for Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. Roerich was an integral part of the creation of the work, drawing from scenes of historical rites for inspiration; Stravinsky referred to the work-in-progress as "our child".

Synopsis

A humble fisherman at his nets is mesmerised by the beauty of a nightingales song. Rich courtiers arrive, led there by the cook who has told them of the bird''s marvellous voice. The court chamberlain tells the bird of the Chinese emperor's desire to hear him. The nightingale agrees to return with them to the court. There, a great feast is being prepared with bustle and anxiety. The emperor appears in splendour and commands the nightingale to sing. Deeply moved by the bird''s voice, he offers rich presents, but the nightingale declares that the emperors tears are reward enough. A delegation from the Japanese emperor arrives with a mechanical nightingale as a gift. Seeing this, the real nightingale flies away. Angered, the Chinese emperor transfers his affections to the Japanese mechanical toy. The emperor falls sick and longs to hear the real nightingale again. The bird arrives and strikes a deal with Death. Death will spare the emperor if the nightingale sings but one more song. So he sings, dawn comes and the emperor recovers. The bird promises to return again each night. (From www.boosey.com/pages/cr)

1913-1917 Svadebka (Les Noces)

Comments:

Les noces combines Russian folk-song, irregular rhythms, a modernist or Cubist sensibility, and instrumentation that Bowdoin Chorus Director Anthony Antolini has likened unto a black-and-white film. It calls for four pianos, six percussionists with instruments, a chorus and four vocal soloists, plus a dance ensemble. Its influence may be heard in the works of Phillip Glass, John Adams (Short Ride in a Fast Machine),
Yet it is rarely recorded or staged, partly because the spare and stark production is somewhat challenging to a typical audience's ear and eye. Also, it is not particularly easy piece; soloists sometimes have to speak/sing dozens of syllables in rapid succession, and at one point the chorus is called upon to shout, "Shch!"

Stravinsky made three versions:
1917 - Choir, solists and large orchestra
1919 - First two parts for pianola, harmonium, 2 cimbaloms and percussion. This version was abandoned because of syncronization problemes with the pianola, although Stravinsky told in an interview the the reason was the problem of finding cimbalom players.
1923 - The definitive version with 4 pianos and percussion.
1924 - Version for Pianola

Igor Stravinsky - Etude for Pianola

Comments:

For French piano manufacturer Pleyel Stravinsky wrote an Etude for their Pianola (mechanical piano).
This is what he tells :
When I began my transcription work for Pleyel six years later, I borrowed one of their instruments for a study at first hand. I discovered the chief problem to be the restrictive application of the pedals caused by the division of the keyboard in two parts; it was like  Cinerama, or a film shown half and half from two projectors."

I remember having seen a concert with a pianola. An odd sight it was:  as if the player was hugging the instrument.
I don't thing I heard the Stravinsky piece though.

For Solo Clarinet (Only 23 notes)
Composed while drunk.
Considered as the 4th piece of the 1919 clarinet piece

Charles Neidich - Clarinet

Was this piece for clarinet a gift in exchange for the 1917 portrait.
This seems likely. The drawing got Stravinsky into a spot of bother.
When traveling from Italy to Switserland the Italian customs would not clear this picture for export to Switserland. They thought it was a map with militairy secrets. Stravinsky asked Gerald Tyrwhitt-Wilson, the future Lord Berners, to forward the drawing by diplomatic post to Switserland.
In Rome he met with Picasso and Diaghilev, who were busy with creating the Parade Ballet. Satie would write the music, but was not in Italy, likely because he could not afford the travel-expenses.
They also gathered sheet music from the baroque era, which would be used for Pulcinella by Stravinsky.

If A.W. Whites story is true, than the arrangement of Song of the Wolga Boatsmen by Stravinsky was also done during this trip.

Orchestration of a well known folksong,

Originally orchestrated bu Glazonov but this version was not considered high-brow enough. Stravinsky's subsequent version was titled : Hymn de la Nouvelle Russe by Stravinsky:
This was to become Russia's new national anthem, but Stravinsky (and Diagilev) did not realise that it might not be Lenin's taste.
Their love for the new Russia would be short lived..

Eric Walter White tells a different story:
While touring Italy, Diagilev needed a short peace to set a Russian mood.
Stravinsky played the orchestration and Ernest Ansermet wrote it down.
All with the hospitality at Lord Berners' Rome appartment.

This is a complete version of Stravinsky's love affair with Barock music. Some of Unico van Wassenaer's Concerti Armonici have been quoted. (Concerto Armonici No 2, Allegro Moderato), formerly attributed to Pergolesi.
It is wonderful, lighthearted music.
Stravinsky: "It was my discovery with the past, the epiphany through which the whole of my later work became possible".

Synopsis:

Parasha, a young girl, is busy at the window of her mother's house in the suburbs of St Petersburg, when her suitor Vassily, a rakish hussar, arrives in the street outside, burning with importunate desire. Parasha agrees to meet him the next day. Parasha's mother enters the room, complaining that they no longer have a reliable maid to look after them. She sends Parasha out to see if she can find someone cheap. Parasha soon returns with a new 'maid' she has engaged... in fact it is the hussar dressed in women's clothes. He introduces himself as 'Mavra' and promises to serve well and for little money. Once on their own, 'Mavra' and Parasha fall into one another's arms. All progresses well with this affair until Parasha's mother unexpectedly walks into the kitchen and finds 'Mavra' shaving. When she faints from shock and fear, 'Mavra'-Vassily seizes the moment, leaps out of the window and runs away, leaving the unfortunate Parasha behind.

Stravinsky wrote this work for a Broadway producer. he seriously considered going into showbiz. Impresario Billy Rose had some second thoughts and telegraphed Stravinsky that it was great but could be sensational. On which Stravinsky replied: I am satisfied with just being great.
Later, the work was played in concert form by the New York Philharmonic.
Stravinsky left with one dream scattered.

1918-1919-1954 Four Russian Songs for voice, flute, harp & guitar

Comments:

Stravinsky's Four Songs from 1953 and 1954 are transcriptions of the first and fourth of his Four Russian Songs (1918 - 1919) for voice and piano, and of the first and second of Three Tales for Children (1915 - 1917), also for voice and piano. The first song, "The Drake," is the first of the Four Russian Songs, and the second song, "A Russian Spiritual," is the fourth of the Four Russian Songs. The third song, "Geese and Swans," is the second of the Three Tales for Children, and the fourth song, "Tilimbom," is the first of the Three Tales for Children. In either version, the songs are marked by the ideas of Stravinsky's post-Sacre Russian period, the same period that saw the composition of Renard and Les Noces.

The adaptation of the piano part for the unusual ensemble of flute, harp, and guitar is not, in the view of some commentators, altogether successful: they find the harp and guitar an inadequate substitution for the keyboard and an unacceptable impersonation of the cimbalom that would have been featured in musical settings of these texts in Stravinsky's native Russia. In addition to arranging the piano part for flute, harp, and guitar, Stravinsky worked out a new phonetic transcription of the Russian text for English-speaking singers. (from allmusic.com)

Biblical allegory, based on the Noah and the Ark story.
Commissioned by CBS TV Network. "A Dance Drama".
Orchestra and Choir cond. Igor Stravinsky and Robert Craft

Synopsis:

After a prelude and choral Te Deum, a speaking Narrator tells of God's creation of the Earth. God himself, sung by two bass voices, brings into being Adam and Eve and then Lucifer, who is swiftly expelled from Heaven to become Satan. In revenge, Satan tempts Eve who tempts Adam. To purge the world of this wickedness, God decides to send a flood. All living things will be destroyed except for Noah, who is told to build an ark and save himself and his family, as well as pairs of all living animals and birds. Noah builds the boat and takes his family, the animals and birds on board. Only his wife refuses to come into the ark until persuaded by the pleadings of her three sons. In anger, she boxes her husband's ears. After the swirling music of the flood, this short 'musical play' ends with The Covenant of the Rainbow. God promises to take care of Noah and his descendants, Noah promises his family will be true to God, Satan still vows revenge and finally God blesses Noah and his sons. A choral Sanctus leads back to the music of the opening.

The original release was on my wish list, although most recordings are on original releases in my collection.

But a restored complete edition on cd was tempting, but at the time rather too expensive.

The complete set is now (07-2007) available at a price, which is more democratic than Stravinsky himself would have cared for.
Around one English pound per CD. He is probably turning in his grave.

Still, it is an opportunity not to be missed.
